Shillong, Dec 3: Nongthymmai legislator and Meghalaya TMC President, Charles Pyngrope, has expressed his concerns over the growing drug menace in the state, emphasizing the need for robust government intervention and infrastructure. Speaking on the issue, Pyngrope highlighted that discussions during the recent autumn session of the House underlined the seriousness of the problem.
Highlighting potential solutions, Pyngrope said, “We need to establish infrastructure in every district to rehabilitate drug users and addicts. Relying solely on private enterprises is not enough. This issue must be taken seriously by the government as a whole.”
When asked about the government’s collaboration with NGOs, some of which have faced allegations of fund misuse, Pyngrope recommended helping genuine NGOs. He noted, “There are genuine NGOs working tirelessly, often using their own resources without government aid. However, the government should partner with such organizations while maintaining strict oversight to ensure proper use of funds. Simply providing funds without accountability is not the solution.”
Pyngrope also cited the example of an NGO that approached him seeking a vehicle to transport aggressive or uncooperative individuals to rehabilitation centers. He mentioned plans to allocate funds for a vehicle through the MLA SRW scheme but stressed that isolated efforts by individuals or NGOs would not suffice. “The government must act swiftly and focus on building adequate infrastructure. A year-long rehabilitation program is often necessary for meaningful recovery,” he added.
On the state government’s current approach, Pyngrope acknowledged its proactive measures but called for greater urgency, saying, “The government has taken steps, but they need to accelerate their efforts considering the pace at which the problem is growing.”
The Meghalaya government recently announced plans to establish 15–20 new rehabilitation centers by 2025. Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh shared this ambitious plan, highlighting the inadequacy of existing facilities. He stated, “We are already funding nine centers run by private institutions and supporting several church-based centers. However, we recognize that these facilities are insufficient, and we are committed to addressing this gap.”
