Ragging in Williamnagar JNV, 7 senior students suspended after junior rushed to hospital

Must read

TURA, Sept 4: In a shocking incident emerging from the once renowned Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya higher secondary school in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, senior students ragged a junior and beat him up so seriously that he had to be admitted to a hospital. Seven of the main attackers have now been suspended from the school.

The ragging attack occurred inside the hostel premises on August 31st night in which Class XI and XII seniors targeted a 16 year old boy who was studying in Class X.

The junior was taken to the room of the seniors at 10 O’clock in the night and subjected to severe beatings leaving his body with injuries.

He was taken to Williamnagar civil hospital for medical treatment and later shifted to Tura where his condition is said to be stable.

Prior to his hospitalization, the injured student managed to report the attack to the school authorities and even named five of the seniors who attacked him. The attackers are said to be just a year older than their victim.

“The victim was called to a room by the seniors where they assaulted him. He reported the incident to the school authorities and during investigation it was found 7 seniors had been involved in the attack. All seven have been rusticated (suspended),” said East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Agarwal.

The DC further informed that another 10 other senior students who played a role in the incident have been sent home for counselling.

The Juvenile Justice Board will be stepping in after the family of the injured student filed a police complaint over the attack.

According to authorities, reports of previous ragging cases have now slowly begun to emerge revealing that the school has for long been grappling with this malaise without any positive aspects. School authorities have allegedly brushed the issue under the carpet for fear of bad publicity.

“It seems cases of ragging were earlier happening in the school but no one reported it,” acknowledged DC Agarwal.

Determined to take head on this evil practice which is rarely witnessed in the north east, and more prevalent in the mainland areas of central India, the East Garo Hills district administration is chalking out a plan to ensure students are safe in the institutions they reside in.

“We will be holding a meeting with the JNV school authorities on this problem and try to find ways to prevent such occurrences in the future,” informed DC Agarwal.

Questions are now being raised over the poor administration by the JNV authorities which is said to be the reason students have been breaking the law and committing crimes like ragging.

“Today the child survived with injuries, it could have been worse. This is purely the fault of the school authorities who failed to check such instances. Trouble making students should have been pulled up and if need be removed from the school before the issue went out of control,” complain some of the parents whose children had passed out of the institution.
