Railway electrification in Assam by 2025 end

Guwahati, March 9: Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V. Somanna has called for the timely completion of critical infrastructure projects, including railway electrification and network expansion, to enhance regional connectivity.

He highlighted that 100% electrification in Assam is targeted for completion by the end of 2025.

The minister concluded a three-day visit to Assam and the Northeast to assess the progress of ongoing railway infrastructure projects. As part of his visit, he inspected Dibrugarh Railway Station on Saturday and Guwahati Railway Station today, reviewing redevelopment works under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) and key passenger facilities.

At Dibrugarh Railway Station, the Minister evaluated modernization efforts being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 26.27 crores. The project, aimed at enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency, is expected to be completed by October 2025. Somanna also reviewed safety measures, passenger amenities, and key infrastructural developments, including railway electrification and the Murkongselek–Pasighat New Line project. Additionally, he visited the Bogibeel Rail-cum-Road Bridge, which has significantly improved connectivity between Dibrugarh and Dhemaji across the Brahmaputra River.

Today, the Minister, accompanied by Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway, inspected the redevelopment work at Guwahati Railway Station, which is being undertaken for Rs. 181.09 crores. During the visit, he reviewed crucial passenger facilities, including waiting halls, QR code ticketing counters, security arrangements, and the Executive Lounge. He also commended the cleanliness of the station and held discussions with railway officials regarding further improvements.

The Minister underscored the rapid advancement of railway infrastructure development in the Northeast under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He pointed out that a record allocation of Rs. 10,440 crores has been made for railways in the region in the Union Budget 2025-26. Furthermore, he noted that 50 railway stations in Assam are undergoing redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
