Rakkam urges vigilance along Bangladesh border after Pahalgam attack

Must read

Shillong, May 3: Cabinet Minister Rakkam A. Sangma has urged residents and security personnel along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya to remain vigilant following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

Expressing concern over possible sleeper cell activity, Rakkam said, “I would request all the residents along the border, across the state, to be very careful and keep our vigilance high. Anything can happen—like the movement of immigrants or sleeper cells. We must stay alert, both civilians and security forces.”

Recalling his recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir, just a week before the Pahalgam attack, the minister added, “This is unfortunate. Such incidents can happen anywhere in the country at any time. That’s why I again urge all those living in the border areas to remain cautious and alert.”

Highlighting a surge in illegal immigration, Rakkam shared that authorities have apprehended over 100 illegal immigrants in the state in just four to five months.

“This border issue is serious. Although it falls under the Government of India, I am concerned because my constituency shares a border with Bangladesh,” he said. “Yes, the situation is tense. We have detected illegal immigration. According to prison authorities, more than 100 illegal immigrants have been arrested in the past few months, and it’s continuing.”

Rakkam emphasized the need for stronger intervention from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the state Home Department.

“Since we border Bangladesh, our state’s border is very weak,” he said. “We have very few security forces posted, poor infrastructure, and no proper road connectivity.”

He also informed that two new BSF platoons have been deployed in South Garo Hills to strengthen ground security. “The state Home Department is also taking all necessary measures to address the issue,” he added.
