Guwahati, Sept 16: In an extraordinary and rare occurrence, a child with conjoined twins, possessing two heads but sharing one body, was delivered at Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College in Barpeta, Assam.
Diman Khatun and Sohir Rahman arrived at the Women’s and Maternity Department of Barpeta Medical College on September 12. During a routine pregnancy examination, the unique condition of their child was discovered. Subsequently, on September 15, the baby was delivered through a Caesarean section, displaying two heads on a single body. The newborn is currently under specialized care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), stated a doctor.
Providing insights into the child’s health condition, Professor Dr. Robin Medhi, Head of the Department of Women’’s and Maternity at the hospital, said the diagnosis should have ideally been made during the prenatal stage.
Given the twins’ shared organs, a Caesarean section was deemed the only viable delivery option.
Noting that the twins possess two legs, two hands, and a single head, Dr. Robin Medhi said the survival of the baby hinges on the extent to which their organs are shared. Typically, in such cases, infants do not survive beyond 48 hours, he added.
This medical phenomenon, recognized as conjoined twins, is a rare occurrence globally, with an estimated birth rate of one in a hundred thousand worldwide. Approximately 5,000 such cases are reported annually in India.
