Dibrugarh, Jan 19: Rat hole mining operations will be shut down within seven days in Assam.
This was announced by Assam DGP G P Singh during a press briefing following a security review meeting in Dibrugarh.
The DGP highlighted that the Chief Minister had directed him to take swift action against illegal mining activities in the Margherita, Ledo, and Lekhapani areas of the Tinsukia district.
“The Chief Minister informed me about the ongoing illegal rat hole mining operations in the state and instructed me to take immediate action. As a result, we held a meeting with administrative officials, the forest department, and representatives from Coal India. Clear instructions have been issued to shut down all such mining activities within seven days,” the DGP stated.
He further noted, “The operation is already underway. As of yesterday, two illegal mining sites within the Northeast Coalfields lease area have been identified and stopped. This morning, we conducted a survey of the Umrangso area. While no new mining operations were discovered, instructions were given to confiscate leftover coal from previous illegal activities. We aim to complete this entire process within seven days.”
On the upcoming Republic Day celebrations, the DGP assured, “We have reviewed all necessary precautions and measures to ensure peaceful celebrations. After assessing regional arrangements over the past two days, I am confident that the people of Assam will celebrate Republic Day peacefully.”
Reflecting on his new role, DGP GP Singh expressed, “It is an honour for me that both the Central and State Governments have entrusted me with this responsibility. With my previous experience in Assam, I am confident that we can achieve significant progress in various regions.”
