Relocation of Harijan Colony: HC grants time to explore settlement

Shillong, April 10: The Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on the case related to the proposed relocation of 342 families of Harijan colony from Them Iew Mawlong till April 28, to enable the state government and the Harijan Panchayat Committee to explore possibility of settlement.

The bench comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh, its order passed on the matter said, “By consent of learned counsel for the parties, this appeal and the connected applications are adjourned till 28th April, 2025 to enable the parties to explore any possibility of settlement.”

The state government had recently requested the government of India to consider allotting 2.5 or 3 acres of unutilized defence land, which is located just opposite a petrol pump at Iew Mawlong.

On January 22, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had however informed that the state government’s request for allotment of defence land for relocation of 342 families of Harijan colony from Them Iew Mawlong is facing some constraints in view of certain military guidelines.
