Shillong, Jan 23: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said the state government’s request for allotment of defence land for relocation of 342 families of Harijan colony from Them Iew Mawlong is facing some constraints in view of certain military guidelines.
Speaking to media persons, Sangma said, “There are certain constraints that are there. If you recall we had requested the defence ministry to give some of the land which is owned by them or in their jurisdiction and we had received some kind of a response from the army officials but certain guidelines, which are there in the manual of the military personnel and the procedures they follow in terms of the land issue and the kind of norms that they followed while they have something – the distance of how many meters of distance can they have another building coming up or what can be the size of the building and so on and so forth.”
“So army has got very strict provisions in terms of the construction that can take place around the army set up and therefore those restrictions are creating a bit of a concern for us right now,” he added.
Asked, Sangma said, “I cannot give the details as it is very technical in nature but that is roughly what the issue is and we are seeing how we can move forward but we are yet to come to a conclusion but this issue being something we have been following up for a very long time, we are very keen to see that we reach a logical end, so we are looking at all possible options including talking to army and working this out.”
“Since we cannot come to a conclusive discussion or decision, I don’t want to talk about it right now, the process is on, we are talking and we are hopeful we will find a way but I think it is a bit too early as I said military procedures are quite complicated so we will have to follow those and see where we reach,” he further added.
