Restoring Roots: Dr Vidyanisth Marak honoured for championing revival of Garo traditional medicine

Must read

Shillong, Dec 17: Garo healers were dismissed as “worthless” by practitioners of modern medicine for many years. But all this changed with the advent of Dr Vidyanisth Marak, a man driven by profound respect for the age-old healing traditions of his community.

His story stands as a testament to perseverance, cultural pride, and the enduring relevance of indigenous knowledge. In recognition of his over 40 years of tireless journey pursuing the cause of restoration of honour for the traditional Garo medicine, he was honoured with the O.N.E. India Award on December 9, 2024 in Mumbai.

Restoring Roots: Dr Vidyanisth Marak honoured for championing revival of Garo traditional medicine

Dr. Marak’s journey into the world of traditional Garo medicine, known as Samachik, began in childhood. Observing his father’s use of natural remedies to heal common ailments, he witnessed the effectiveness of this ancestral wisdom. After marriage, his father-in-law further deepened his understanding of these practices. But a pivotal moment came in 1987 — a year that marked his awakening to a harsh reality. Despite its efficacy, Samachik was dismissed as “worthless” by practitioners of modern medicine. This disregard, bordering on disdain, ignited a resolve in him that would shape the rest of his life.

Determined to restore the honour of Samachik and its practitioners, Dr. Marak embarked on a mission that was as ambitious as it was vital. He began organizing Garo traditional healers, uniting them under a common banner. His efforts culminated in the formation of the Samachik Association, a platform for healers from over 2,500 villages spread across the five districts of Garo Hills. Dr. Marak currently serves as the general secretary of this apex body, which continues to be the backbone of the traditional medicine revival movement in the region.

Over the years, this grassroots mobilization has become a powerful force for health equity. Through sustained advocacy, Dr Marak secured recognition for Samachik from the Meghalaya state government, transforming it from a marginalized practice into an accepted part of the public health system. State funds were allocated to build hospitals dedicated to traditional medicine in each of the five districts of Garo Hills, where treatment is provided using time-honoured herbal remedies and Indigenous techniques.

Traditional healers, present in nearly every village of Garo Hills, now play a crucial role in making healthcare accessible to remote communities. Their work has complemented government health initiatives, notably aiding in the eradication of tuberculosis and malaria — two of the most stubborn public health challenges in the region. By blending Samachik with modern health interventions, the Garo Hills now stand as a model of integrated community health.
