Tura, July 3: A crucial road in Baghmara town that is also the only approach towards Siju, Rongara and Nangalbira has collapsed due to continuous rains, late Tuesday night.
An entire portion of the road just above the Baghmara Municipal Board caved in after a night of heavy rains, effectively cutting off road communication to East Garo Hills and even South West Khasi Hills, through the Rongara region.
Also, vehicles will no longer be able to move to the Deputy Commissioner’s office from the main Baghmara town as the collapsed portion lies between the two ends of town.
Locals say lack of maintenance, particularly absence of retaining walls, and unwarranted construction in the periphery of the road may have accelerated the damage.
Garo Hills has been experiencing a phenomenal amount of rainfall in the last one week resulting in landslides, house collapses, and even flooding.
Following the collapse of the road in Baghmara, commuters entering town from the Siju side will have to disembark and walk across from the Baghmara circuit house point to cross the damaged road at New Bazar where the municipal board office is located.
