Shillong, Aug 27: Congress leader Ronnie V. Lyngdoh has resigned as the Leader of Opposition (LO) in the 11th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
A notification issued by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat on Monday said Lyngdoh had resigned from the post of Leader of Opposition with effect from Monday and his resignation was accepted by the Speaker.
“It is hereby notified for general information that Shri. Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, Leader of Opposition, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has resigned from the post of Leader of Opposition with effect from 27th August, 2024. The Hon’ble Speaker has accepted the resignation,” the notification signed by Dr. Andrew Simons, Commissioner & Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, read.
Ronnie Lyngdoh is the lone Congress legislator in Meghalaya Assembly following the merger of 3 of its MLAs with National People’s Party (NPP) earlier this month. Congress had won 5 seats in 2023 State Assembly elections but its number reduced to 4 when Saleng A. Sangma won the Tura MP elections earlier this year. The number came down to just one with 3 of its legislators joining the ruling NPP.
With the strength of just 1 MLA in the Assembly, Congress has been reduced to the smallest party in the current Assembly, and the Trinamool Cognress has become the biggest party in opposition with 5 seats followed by VPP with 4 seats.
