Shillong, Dec 22: Congress leader and MDC from Mylliem Ronnie V Lyngdoh on Tuesday slammed the NDA government at the Centre for attempting to make teachings of the “Bhagavad Gita” as a compulsory social subject for students.
Addressing media persons, Lyngdoh said the proposal was brought by one member of the BJP in the Parliament in the form of a Private Member’s Bill.
“As a party, we oppose this move and we request all like minded parties to oppose it because this is a secular country, you cannot impose on anyone or thrust down the throat of students that they learn the Bhagavad Gita. I have nothing against that holy book of the Hindus but then to make it a compulsory subject, I oppose,” he said.
Lyngdoh also said that the party strongly condemns the attacks on Christian churches and institutions all over the country.
“Why are you attacking these religious minority institutions and churches and all for your electoral gains, come on. Please don’t attack minorities for your electoral gains as in the long run you are going to pay a heavy price,” he warned.
He further stated that in the committee of nations, India was known as a pillar of democracy but that is being destroyed day by day by the NDA government in Delhi.
“Therefore, we urge upon all like minded who believe in secularism to oppose such attacks on religious minorities be it Christians or any other religious minorities,” he said.
