Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong’s ‘Project Hariyali’ reaches Nongumlong Village

Shillong, Sept 13: The Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong organised a tree plantation drive under its mega tree plantation initiative, “Project Hariyali”, sponsored by Mahindra Finance, at Nongumlong Village, Shillong.

C&RD Minister, Hamletson Dohling  graced the event as the Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Dohling said green is the future and stressed on taking care of the plants after plantation. He said that the School students should tag a tree with their name and take care of it and see it grow and bear fruit as they will grow in their lives. He thanked Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong and Mahindra Finance for starting this wonderful green movement and he asked the club to reach widely and help the community in his constituency and throughout Meghalaya, while promising his support for such initiatives.

“Green movement is the best solution to saving environment and arresting pollution,” was the message given by Vivek Kumar, Project Chair- Hariyali. He mentioned that, trees play a critical role for people and the planet. Trees not only provide free oxygen, sequester carbon dioxide, but it also provides numerous tangible and intangible benefits to environment and living beings. He mentioned that we should not only plant trees, but together take the responsibility to care for it and see it grow.

Archbishop of Shillong, Rev. Victor Lyngdoh, joined the green movement and planted a tree sapling on the occasion. He said that all should take responsibility and play an important role in saving environment by planting trees and caring for it.

The event concluded with a message,” Plant a tree, and plant green hope for future”.

Project Hariyali

Project Hariyali, a green movement to strengthen the lungs of planet, kicked-off in Meghalaya on September 07, and since then the club has conducted plantation drive with fruit-bearing tree saplings at Wahkhen Village, two locations in R-Bhoi District – Kyrdemkulai Village & Rilong Umran Farm, multiple locations in West Jaintia Hills in collaboration with Rotary Club of Jowai and concluded at Nongumlong Village.
