Guwahati, April 28: To curb touting activities and theft on trains, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has intensified its operations, leading to significant seizures and arrests over the past year.
According to the latest figures released by the NFR, 173 touts were apprehended during the 2023-24 fiscal year, with railway tickets worth Rs. 22.81 lakhs (approximately) recovered. In addition, the RPF successfully nabbed 437 individuals involved in stealing passenger belongings across the railway network.
The crackdown has been relentless, with the RPF conducting raids in coordination with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and local law enforcement agencies. One such raid on April 23, 2024, at a travel agency in Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal, resulted in the recovery of five e-tickets valued at around Rs. 13,820 and the apprehension of a tout.
Similarly, on April 24, 2024, an RPF team in Alipurduar apprehended another tout and seized a railway ticket worth approximately Rs. 3,440. The following day, a joint operation by the RPF and GRP teams in Katihar led to the arrest of an individual who possessed a stolen mobile phone.
The relentless efforts of the RPF underscore the railway authority’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure journey for passengers across the Northeast Frontier Railway network. Authorities have urged travelers to purchase proper tickets to avoid complications during their journeys and have provided a toll-free number (139) for passengers to report any issues or seek assistance.
