Shillong, May 5: The Society of A•chik Film & Entertainment (S.A.F.E) in Tura has expressed concern and disappointment over the exclusion of renowned Garo filmmaker, Dominic Sangma, from the Cannes Film Festival 2023.
In a letter addressed to the Director of Information & Public Relations, the society stated that Sangma’s exclusion is a great loss for the Garo community and the state film industry.
Sangma has already received numerous awards and recognition for his work in the international cinema industry, and has contributed significantly to the field. His short film, ‘Karyukai Inc.’, was screened in international film circuits like Munich, Kosovo, and Venice in 2010. His film, ‘Rong•kuchak’, won the National Award for ‘Best Student Film’ in 2014 and was screened at various national and international film festivals. His latest work, ‘Rapture’, was selected for the coveted La Fabrique section at Cannes. Both these films became the first indigenous films from Meghalaya to be co-produced by international producers.

The S.A.F.E has also demanded answers for removal of Sangma’s name from the list of delegates to be sent to the Cannes Film Festival at the last moment despite the recommendation from the Art & Culture Department and Director of Information & Public Relations.
“It is essential to recognise and promote the talents of our country, especially those who have already made a significant contribution to the field of art and culture. In other states, deserving candidates are given the opportunity to represent their community and showcase their work at such prestigious events. It is disappointing to know that deserving filmmakers like Mr. Sangma are being left out,” it said.
S.A.F.E further urged for immediate action to be taken to recognize and promote the talents of the state, especially those who have already made significant contributions to the field of art and culture.
