Dibrugarh, April 27: Union Minister and Dibrugarh MP Sarbananda Sonowal today extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Assam on the joyous occasion of Rongali Bihu and the Assamese New Year. Addressing a large gathering at Barekuriya, Sonowal fondly recalled his deep connection with the region, which first elected him to Parliament in 2004.

Aiming to give fresh momentum to India’s unstoppable journey towards becoming a Viksit Bharat through holistic rural development, Sonowal led an extensive election campaign at Barekuriya and Lankachi in Tinsukia district, seeking support for BJP and alliance candidates.

Emphasising the achievements of the BJP-led double-engine government, Sonowal urged the people to continue supporting welfare measures that are steering villages towards a bright and prosperous future.

Addressing the gathering, Sonowal said, “Today, after witnessing the overwhelming love, blessings, and support of the people during the election campaign in Tinsukia, I am confident that the victory of the BJP and its allies will once again be unstoppable and indomitable. The people of Barekuriya, Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh have always treated me as one of their own. I am eternally grateful for your love and trust.”
Reflecting on his early days, he shared that his first contribution through parliamentary funds was providing an ambulance to Barekuriya.

Sonowal also spoke about his emotional bond with the region, recalling his visits between 2001 and 2004 during political challenges, where he sought spiritual strength at Dharma Huchuri. “This land and its people have a special place in my heart,” he said.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Panchayat elections, Sonowal urged voters to elect candidates committed to sincere grassroots development. He outlined a vision for Panchayati Raj focused on ensuring that every family becomes economically self-reliant, enjoys social justice, and lives with dignity while preserving their land, roots, and culture. Strengthening Panchayati Raj, he said, would directly contribute to a prosperous Assam and a stronger Bharat.

Highlighting achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Sonowal said the past decade had brought transformational change to rural and tea garden areas. He emphasised that robust systems like Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) had eliminated middlemen and ensured direct delivery of welfare benefits to genuine beneficiaries, ending the Congress-era legacy of corruption.

Lashing out at the Congress, Sonowal said, “Despite 55 years of rule, Congress weakened India, exploiting the poor instead of serving them. Rampant corruption flourished — after I became Chief Minister, I found that under Congress rule, public funds for 7 lakh fake children’s nutrition and 3 lakh fake houses under the Indira Awas Yojana were siphoned off by politicians. Such was the character of Congress, where corruption and dynasty politics were rooted in every branch and leaf.”

Sonowal reiterated his commitment to work with integrity and sought the people’s continued support to strengthen village governance and fast-track Assam’s growth towards self-reliance and prosperity.
