New Delhi, Jan 8: The Supreme Court, on Monday, overturned the Gujarat government’s decision to provide remission to 11 convicts involved in the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 riots in the state.
The bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan, while deeming the PIL challenging the remission maintainable, declared that the Gujarat government was not the proper authority to issue the remission order.
At 21 years old and five months pregnant, Bilkis Bano endured the traumatic experience of rape while escaping the horrors of the communal riots sparked by the Godhra train-burning incident.
Tragically, her three-year-old daughter was one of the seven family members who lost their lives in the riots. Despite their involvement in the heinous crime, all 11 convicts were granted remission by the Gujarat government and released on August 15, 2022.
