Shillong, Jan 25: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Friday said the government has directed all district administrations to take necessary steps to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations.

His statement came a day after one 37-year-old Edward Maiong was arrested from his temporary residence at Lower New Colony Laitumkhrah for threatening to plant multiple bombs in Shillong city.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said that investigation and interrogation against the accused person is going on.

“The state police are on the job to get to the bottom of this,” he added.

Tynsong also informed that the government has issued necessary instructions to all district administrations and police to take all measures to ensure law and order is maintained.

“We will ensure safety and security of all citizens and that the republic day celebrations pass off peacefully,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the state police have beefed up security ahead of the Republic Day celebrations on January 26.

Following the bomb threat in Shillong, East Khasi Hills SP had said that the district police are conducting heavy checking at all points in the city including combing operations and intensified patrolling within the district to thwart any attempt to disrupt the Republic Day celebration.

“A lot of combing operations are taking place in the border areas and the outskirts of the city…advisories have been sent everywhere and all our men are on the ground. We have got additional forces also to actually help us enhance the security of the city and also the district so things are in place,” he had informed.

The SP  had also assured, “we will ensure that there is peace and security and the public can come out and celebrate republic day.”
