Shillong, Aug 5: Following renewed violence in Bangladesh that has led to the death of atleast 98 people on Sunday alone and mounting pressure, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, resigned on Monday and fled the country, ending her 15-year tenure.
Since the anti-quota protests began in the country in July, atleast 300 people have been killed in clashes with security forces and pro-government groups.
She fled the country in a military helicopter. The Daily Star reported that she had landed in Agartala in the north-eastern Indian State of Tripura. However, Airport Director of Agartala Airport has denied about any Helicopter landing at the airport.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources said Hasina was headed for Delhi, and would potentially fly to London from there.
Thousands of protesters stormed her official residence, Ganabhaban, in Dhaka on Monday afternoon as reports emerged that Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, had departed for a “safe shelter”.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Army Chief General, Waker-Uz-Zaman, said an interim government would take charge of the country, The Daily Star reported.
Earlier in the day, he held talks with leaders of various political parties, including the ruling Awami League and the opposition BNP, and other stakeholders, local media reported.
The protests began peacefully in late June, as students sought an end to a quota system for government jobs but turned violent after clashes between protesters and police and pro-government activists at Dhaka University.
The government’s attempts to quell the demonstrations with force, curfews and internet shutdowns backfired, prompting further outrage as nearly 300 people were killed and led to demands for an end to her 15 years in power.
