Shillong, March 22: The Department of Public Health Engineering (PHE), observed the World Water Day 2024 at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong. The theme for World Water Day this year is ‘Water for Peace’.

This day is celebrated to raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water and taking action to tackle the global water crisis.

The event was graced by D.P Wahlang, Chief Secretary, along with Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, Additional Chief Secretary, Syed Md. A. Razi, Commissioner & Secretary, PHED, RM Kurbah, Secretary Water Resource Department, and B.M Lyndem, Chief Engineer, PHED Meghalaya, Shillong.

A series of competitions like painting, singing, street skit, marathon were also organised to celebrate this day.

An exhibition was also put out during the event by different colleges to emphasize on the importance of safe and sustainable usage of water with modern techniques.

During the event, D.P Wahlang emphasized the importance of preserving water resources and ensuring its sustainable use for future generations. He highlighted the significance of the theme ‘Water for Peace’ and urged everyone to actively participate in initiatives aimed at conserving and managing water resources effectively.

DP Wahlang also spoke about the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and its role in providing safe drinking water to every household. He reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable water management practices and encouraged community participation in achieving this goal. The Chief Secretary also expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their efforts towards water conservation and pledged to continue working towards water security in the state.

Cash awards were also distributed to all the winners of all the different competition at the event.
