Must read

Shillong, June 3: The longest day for any politician is always the run up to counting day, with the hours dragging by at a snail’s pace and a tense and uneasy wait lingers on- Will he/she make it, or not.

So also is the case in Meghalaya where the fate of 10 MP candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats- Shillong and Tura, lies in the hands of 16,42,316 voters who cast their votes on April 19, and a tense nail biting

With bated breath, the six candidates for Shillong parliamentary constituency and four candidates for Tura parliamentary constituency await the decision of the people of Meghalaya as counting of votes is due to take place in less than 24 hours from now.

For the Shillong seat, two parties remain sure of victory, while another is overly confident. Meanwhile, in Tura, the contest appears to be a direct face-off between two political parties in a neck-and-neck race.

Based on the general trend of exit polls conducted by various agencies, it is predicted that both incumbent MPs will retain their seats in the Lok Sabha. However, the ground reality remains uncertain as new faces might steal the spotlight.

The incumbent MP for the Shillong seat, Vincent H. Pala of the Indian National Congress (INC), is facing a tough election, contending against two strong candidates: Cabinet Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh and Voice of the People Party (VPP) candidate Dr. Ricky Syngkon. In Tura, the sitting MP of the NPP, Agatha K. Sangma, is experiencing sleepless nights as contender and Gambegre MLA Saleng Sangma has put up a strong fight.

In Shillong, the VPP wave is prominent, especially on social media, but Congress’ Vincent Pala has thrice proven that silence is best, and he may prove it once again. Meanwhile, the trend in Garo Hills suggests that the NPP-BJP alliance might be a disadvantage for the NPP.

All these doubts and questions will be answered tomorrow by the voters of the two parliamentary constituencies in Meghalaya.
