Must read

Shillong, July 16: The latest drive by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to detect and send back illegal migrant workers from different parts of Khasi-Jaintia Hills has drawn a lot of reaction from various quarters with some lauding the move while others cautioning of a similar push back from other parts of the country.

While the social media is abuzz with all sorts of voices, Hub News talked to some of the youth in Shillong city to know their reaction to KSU’s move. The youth of Shillong have unified in their support for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state. When questioned, they cited the growing issue of migrant influx as a major concern. While they appreciate the efforts of the pressure groups, they emphasized the need to avoid violence against anyone.

The pressure group has intensified document checks of migrant workers despite police actions against their members, with the union erecting their own Inner Line Permit (ILP) check gates in different parts of Khasi – Jaintia Hills.

One of the students raised concerns over the rising number of illegal migrants in the state. She said illegal migrants must be sent back for the security of the state. Another youth said the ILP will ensure that Meghalaya develops expeditiously, as its current development is very slow compared to other states.

Another student was of the opinion that there is too much of tourism in the state due to lack of ILP. Having the ILP will not only control entry of outsiders but also control the tourist inflow, thereby regulating the tourism circuit.

In the meantime, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday. While the details of the meeting remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that the Chief Minister raised several longstanding issues, including the ILP and language resolution, with the central government.

It is noteworthy that the State Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution in 2019 urging the Centre to consider extending the implementation of the ILP to the state. This proposal is still awaiting approval from the Union government.
