Mumbai, Feb 9: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Abhishek Ghosalkar was tragically shot dead on Thursday evening during a Facebook Live stream by a local “social activist” who subsequently took his own life. The incident occurred at assailant Mauris Noronha’s office in IC Colony, Borivali (West). A viral video of the event captured Ghosalkar being shot in the abdomen and shoulder.
The attack, streamed live on Facebook, occurred just days after Maharashtra witnessed CCTV footage of a BJP MLA opening fire inside a police station in neighboring Thane district, raising concerns about the law and order situation. Abhishek Ghosalkar, aged 40 and the son of former MLA Vinod Ghosalkar, was a loyalist of the Uddhav Thackeray-led party and a former corporator.
In the video, Ghosalkar can be seen being shot in the abdomen and shoulder while he was live on Facebook with Noronha, identified as a local activist. Additionally, sounds of three more shots can be heard in the clip.
Ghosalkar and Noronha reportedly had a “personal enmity,” but the Facebook Live session was organized to address and clarify their differences, aiming for reconciliation for the betterment of the IC Colony area, according to another police official.
Chief Minister Shinde announced the initiation of an investigation into the recent firing incident.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut claimed on X that Shinde had met Noronha at the chief minister’s official residence, ‘Varsha,’ four days prior and had invited him to join the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Raut further called for Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s resignation.
