Road congestion in Tura sparks concern: AHAM urges CM intervention

Must read

Tura, Feb 09: Queues snaking down miles and for long durations along major roads in Tura has become an eyesore for citizens and visitors alike, prompting the Garo organization AHAM to petition Meghalaya Chief Minister and local MLA Conrad K Sangma to address the issue.

AHAM has highlighted several intersections across Tura town that require expansion and streamlining to alleviate congestion and improve the commuting experience for residents.

One of the primary concerns raised is the reliance on a single road, via Dermile/Civil Hospital Road, connecting Old Town Tura and New Tura.

AHAM apprised that this could pose serious problems in the event of damage or closure, effectively cutting off the city’s two halves and bringing life to a standstill.

Additionally, the growing volume of traffic on this road, serving as the sole connection for inbound traffic from the west and north, is deemed unsustainable in the long run.

AHAM urged for urgent consideration of alternative routes to enhance connectivity and mitigate future traffic issues.

Highlighting the need for a bypass or ring road, AHAM emphasizes that the existing routes through the city are narrow, congested, and slow, further exacerbating the traffic woes.

Furthermore, AHAM stresses the necessity of four-lane highways in three crucial directions: North (Tura to Paikan), West (Tura to Phulbari), and South (Tura to Dalu). Upgrading these routes, will stimulate trade, commerce, and the regional economy while improving the overall quality of life for residents.
