Nongpoh, July 23: The body of a man who was buried under a landslide that struck his farmhouse in Umdap Rngi, Ri Bhoi district, was recovered on Thursday following a joint rescue operation involving the police, Fire and Emergency Service personnel, village authorities and local residents.

According to sources, the landslide is believed to have occurred on July 20 after nearly three to four hours of continuous heavy rainfall triggered a slope collapse in the area.

The deceased, a resident of Byrnihat, had reportedly been living in the forested area of Umdap Rngi for several years, where he was engaged in farming.

Concern arose after he failed to return home, prompting his brother to search for him. Upon reaching the farmhouse, he found that the hut had been completely buried under the landslide and immediately informed the village authorities and the Byrnihat Police.

Following the alert, personnel from the Byrnihat Police, the Fire and Emergency Service, and residents of Umdap Rngi and Umdap Dumu launched a coordinated rescue operation. An excavator was deployed to clear the debris, and after nearly four hours of intensive efforts, the victim’s body was recovered at around 4 pm on Thursday.

Police have taken up the necessary legal formalities, while further investigation into the incident is underway.
