Sikkim bans animal slaughter for 15 days to observe Buddhist holy fortnight

Gangtok, Feb 28: The Sikkim government has banned animal slaughter in the state for 15 days, starting from today(February 28), to mark a Buddhist holy fortnight of the Tibetan calender.

According to the order, all meat shops in Sikkim will remain closed for 15 days.

The Ecclesiastical Department, has taken the decision to ban animal slaughter and sale for fortnight.

In a notification, the import of meat from outside the state may be permitted only under unavoidable circumstances such as wedding, social events, and for feeding of zoo animals.

“The importers must seek prior permission from the department,” the notification stated.

“Shops selling fish, however, have been exempted from any restriction though it will be desirable if fish too is not sold out respecting the religious sentiments during this period,” the notification stated.
