Gangtok, Oct 9: Over 70 people have died and 100 remain traceless in the devastating flash floods in Sikkim, which was triggered by glacial burst on the South Lhonak lake on Wednesday morning.
“There are 33 confirmed deaths in the state. At least 40 dead bodies have been found in the river bed of Teesta in past six days in neighbouring Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.
Among these ten dead bodies have been identified,” said an official source.
Over five thousand people have been rescued and evacuated in past six days, parts of North Sikkim of still Cut off.
According to reports, eight Army personnel have died in the tragedy.
“Search for the missing soldiers continues. Out of 23, one was rescued alive on October 4. Eight bodies were identified till now,” stated a press release Thangu, Army.
Troops of the TriShakti Corps are providing assistance to 1700 tourists stranded in areas of Lachen, Lachung, Thangu and Chungthang in North Sikkim. Food, medical aid, communication facility is being provided.
With the weather remaining inclement, the Indian Army is making all efforts to keep tourists safe until they are evacuated.
Chungthang bore the brunt of the flash flood in the Teesta informed Rescue teams that have already reached Chungthang have informed that almost 80 percent of Chungthang town has suffered damage in the flash flood.
More than 1,200 houses were damaged in the flash flood, which also washed away 13 bridges in the picturesque Himalayan state.
