“We are going to met one of our friend at Deopani area, suddenly we saw a cattle laden vehicle coming in a high speed. When we told the driver of the vehicle to stop the vehicle, he tried hit us with his vehicle which was in high speed. One of our member was injured after he was hit by the vehicle. When we chased him he left the vehicle and run away,” said a member of Bir Lachit Sena.

He said, “We have filed an FIR at Palasbari police station against for trying to kill our associate. We urged police to nab the driver as soon as possible,”.

“It is a big racket and many people are involved in this illegal cattle smuggling business. The cattle laden vehicle was coming from Mirza and going towards Chandubi area. If the police failed to take any step against the cattle smuggling then we would take step to held them,” said the activist.

According to a local resident, illegal cattle smuggling has been going on unabated in the area despite the strict law against cattle smuggling.

“Everyday from 5 a.m onwards the trucks carrying illegal cattle passed through the roads in a high speed. We urged the police to take immediate step to arrest the cattle lifters,” said the resident.

On August 13, the assembly passed the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill, 2021, banning cattle slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs are in a majority or within a five-kilometre radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monasteries) or any other institution as may be prescribed by authorities.

The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, was amended in the assembly, empowering the police to enter the house of an accused and inspect, search, and seize properties acquired in the last six years with money earned from the illegal cattle trade.

Smuggling of cattle is rampant along the India-Bangladesh borders in Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and North Bengal.

The cattle procured from different parts of the country are smuggled through the borders, ultimately industries their way to the beef processing and tan industry in Bangladesh.
