Gangtok, Oct 6: Sikkim government has issued an advisory and instructed the authorities to evacuate the residents from the river basin areas as it fears for another glacial lake burst.
Shako Cho Lake, near Lachen, Mangan district in Sikkim, is on the verge of bursting, prompting authorities to evacuate residents from the river belt.
Shako Cho glacial lake is above the village of Thangu in Sikkim, India. The lake is 1.3 km long, and the distance from the lake to the village of Thangu is 12 km.
According to reports, entire Golitar area in Singtam in Gangtok District, Dikchu area in Mangan District, Rangpo IBM area in Pakyong District have been cleared by authorities.
Tushar Nikhare, Distil Magistrate of Gangtok, issued the advisory on Thursday.
“The discharge is less. Advisory is for evacuation… Satellite data showed abnormal increase in glacial temperature over Shako Cho and if temp stabilises, it will not be an issue. Re-confirmation will happen at 0730hrs in morning,” said Tushar Nikhare, DM Gangtok.
“However as precautionary measure, evacuation advisory is in place… Already since silt has been deposited, any sudden discharge of water will be at elevated level, over deposited debris & can cause damage…hence this exercise of caution and evacuation… All to stay alert,” the advisory issued read.
Caution for explosives
Advisory has also been issued about possibility of finding explosives and ammunition washed away in flash floods from the under-construction dam sites.
“The local population are hereby warned that explosives or ammunition etc. may be found along the Teesta Basin. These ammunitions should not be handled or picked up since they may explode and cause grievous injuries. On sight of such devices, it may be brought to the notice of the District Collectors or the State Emergency Operations Centre (03592/201145/202461/205256),” an advisory issued by Sikkim government said.
Tourists advised to postpone travel
On the other hand, tourist have been advised not to travel to Sikkim. The tourism department has also issued an advisory and urged the tourist not to panic in the crisis situation. The tourists are advised to postpone their travel with immediate effect because of the crisis and if everything is normal, they can travel to the state.
