Imphal, Nov 17: The fragile peace in Manipur, where ethnic tensions between the Kuki and Meitei communities have simmered for over 18 months, was shattered again as violence escalated across the state. Tensions rose sharply following the discovery of three bodies, suspected to be missing persons, along the Assam-Manipur border.
Protests erupted across the Imphal Valley on Saturday, with hundreds taking to the streets, prompting the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to intervene. The MHA directed all security agencies in the state to take immediate measures to restore peace and maintain order, describing the situation as “fragile.”
In response, the state government imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching districts. A curfew was enforced from 4:30 PM on November 16. The home department suspended internet services in seven districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur.
The violence, attributed to armed miscreants from both communities, has led to multiple casualties and a severe disruption of public order. Condemning the unrest, the MHA issued a stern warning, stating that strict action would be taken against individuals or groups engaging in disruptive activities.
In a related development, the ethnically diverse district of Jiribam, which had largely avoided the clashes affecting the Imphal Valley and adjoining hills, was not spared. Tensions flared in June after the mutilated body of a farmer was discovered in a field, further aggravating the volatile situation in the state.
The state continues to grapple with the challenges of restoring peace amid the deep-rooted ethnic discord.
