Small school quarrel turns into violent attack on indigenous people in Barpeta

Guwahati, May 16: A quarrel on a small issue in a school turned into a violent clash after a man belonging from indigenous community was badly trashed by a group of people from a different community in Assam’s Barpeta district on Tuesday.

According to reports, under the leadership of Jawar Khan of Surpura village, the attack took place. The victim who has suffered serious injury has been identified as- Pranob Das, resident of Bamunbari village in Bhawanipur’s Barpeta district. Along with Pranob, Bikash Das, Mausum Das and, Konjyoti Talukdar also suffered injuries during the attack.

Meanwhile, police have started an investigation to nab the culprits involved in the deadly attack on indigenous people.

Speaking to media persons, Bikash Das, son of Pranob Das said, “a small quarrel took place in school and the two children were fighting with each other in the road, Pranob Das my father tried to intervene in the matter and told them not to fight and sorted the issue in school. Suddenly, under the leadership of Jawar Khan, the people of the Surpura village came chasing my father and thrashed him badly. When I tried to intervene, they thrashed me and my brother. Even they chased my ailing mother,”.

Another victim, Konjyoti Talukdar, said, “I saw a group of people chasing a man from our village, I tried to stop them, but they attacked me with bamboo. They even looted my money bag and my mobile,”

State cabinet minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on Wednesday visited Barpeta Medical College and enquired about the health condition of the people injured in the attack. Baruah later visited the Bamunbari village and took stock of the situation.

Talking to media persons, Jayanta Mall Baruah said, “I have taken stock of the situation and understand everything regarding yesterday’s incident. Instruction has been given to the police to book the culprits who were involved in the group attacked. It is a very unfortunate incident, and our government is very serious about safeguarding the rights and security of indigenous people. Nobody can take law into their hands; the police will act as per law and strict action will be taken against the persons involved in the attack on indigenous people. A case has already been registered,”.
