SHILLONG, MAY 5: Social activist Cherian Momin has blamed rampant deforestation and illegal mining behind the unprecedented environmental crisis being faced by the Garo Hills region.

In a statement, Momin said despite its lush forests and abundant waterways, the region is reeling from the effects of rampant deforestation, illegal mining, and erratic weather patterns.

“The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat—it’s here, and it’s affecting us all,” he said while adding, “The once-thriving ecosystem of Garo Hills has been decimated by human greed and exploitation. It’s time for urgent action to protect our environment and our future.”

According to recent reports, Garo Hills has experienced a significant decline in forest cover, with illegal logging and coal mining wreaking havoc on the landscape. This loss of natural habitat has disrupted the delicate balance of the ecosystem, leading to dwindling water sources and increasing temperatures.

“The destruction of our forests has had a cascading effect on our water sources. Streams and rivers have dried up, leaving communities without access to clean drinking water. This is not just an environmental issue—it’s a humanitarian crisis,” he said.

He said that in addition to water shortages, farmers are struggling to cope with the changing climate, as erratic rainfall patterns and soaring temperatures threaten their livelihoods. Many are facing crop failures and economic hardship as a result.

“The situation in Garo Hills is dire, but it’s not too late to act,” he said while also adding, “We need immediate intervention from the government to control illegal mining and enforce environmental laws. We also need to invest in sustainable practices that will protect our forests and water sources for future generations.”

Momin calls on the state government to prioritize the preservation of Garo Hills’ fragile ecosystem and take decisive action to address the climate crisis. “We cannot afford to ignore the warning signs any longer. The time to act is now before it’s too late,” he stated.
