South Garo Hills NGOs serve 7-day ultimatum to Govt for poor infra development

Must read

Baghmara, June 26: Organisations from one of the most backward districts of Meghalaya, South Garo Hills, have served a week’s ultimatum to the government to expedite the construction of NH 62 (217) and repair the civil hospital in the district or face agitation.

The organisations, Garo Students’ Union Southern Zone – Federation of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo People and others, in a joint memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, South Garo Hills district, threatened agitation if their demands aren’t addressed within a week.

These organisations said the work progress of the NH 62 (217) is extremely slow causing hardship to the commuters and also highlighted that the beneficiaries are yet to get their compensation from the government. They therefore demanded that the highway’s construction be expedited or major repair works be undertaken.

“The repair work at the Baghmara Civil Hospital has been halted. This is unacceptable. The hospital lacks essential amenities such as fans, running water and proper toilets, which are critical for maintaining hygiene and providing adequate care for patients,” the organisations pointed out. They demanded that these basic amenities be provided within a week.

In a separate memorandum to Minister in-charge Education, Rakkam Sangma, the same organisations demanded the removal of Government Boys Higher Secondary School Baghmara Principal, KK Paul, for alleged “negligence and dereliction of duty.”

They said Paul has done precious little with the issue of shortage of teachers, in science and maths for the past six months in the school; he has also failed to hire temporary teachers in these subjects.

They also highlighted dilapidated school infrastructure, fourth teachers going unpaid for months and stalled construction of the new government school building as some of the reasons for them seeking Paul’s dismissal and appointment of a new school Principal.
