Must read

Tura, June 26: A BSF officer in the rank of Sub Inspector lost his life after a wild herd of elephants attacked him while he was on duty at the border in Dalu region of West Garo Hills, early Wednesday morning.

Sub Inspector Rajbir Singh belonged to the 100 Bn of the BSF that is deployed in the Garo Hills sector of the border.

He left the company camp at Chandabui early in the morning, proceeding to the border to supervise the duty of the jawans, when the attack occured sometime between 5 and 6 AM.

As he was proceeding through the border road, a wild herd of elephants suddenly came out from the jungles and charged at him. There was little he could do.

The herd trampled the officer to death.

His mortal remains are being taken back to his home state of Haryana for the last rites.

This attack comes after a similar incident took place last year along the same West-South Garo Hills border stretch when a jawan was chased and killed by another herd of wild elephants.

The wild herd, in search of food, are in a state of aggressive behavior because villagers on both sides, Indian and Bangladesh, traumatize the pachyderms frightening them and chasing them away using fire crackers and other means, that ultimately leads to the beasts attacking the first human they come across.
