Shillong, Nov 27: Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma reiterated on Wednesday that his decision regarding the merger of three Congress legislators with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) remains unchanged but emphasized that all parties are welcome to appeal.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma stated, “We are in a democratic setup, and everybody has the right to appeal. I have given my decision, and that decision still stands, but everyone is welcome to challenge it.”
He further explained the process, saying, “Each appeal is thoroughly examined. We refer it to legal experts, take their advice, and respond accordingly.”
Opposition Congress chief Vincent H Pala on November 3, had expressed disappointment over the alleged delay of the Assembly Speaker to give his ruling on the petition seeking the immediate disqualification of the three MLAs for defecting to the National People’s Party (NPP).
Accordingly, he had informed the party is now preparing to soon file a petition before the Meghalaya High Court for its necessary intervention on the matter.
Meanwhile, on a separate note, Speaker Sangma expressed joy over the increased representation of women in the Assembly following the election of Dr. Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma, the Chief Minister’s wife, as the new Gambegre legislator.
“It is a great joy and pride to welcome the fourth female legislator to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly,” he remarked after administering her oath of office. “This is a proud moment for the people of Meghalaya and for the Assembly itself. It was a great pleasure to administer the oath to our newly elected lady MLA.”
