Shillong, Nov 27: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) national president Conrad K. Sangma reaffirmed on Wednesday that there will be no realignment in the state’s political landscape, as his party remains committed to working with its Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition partners for the stability and progress of the government.
Speaking to the media, Sangma expressed gratitude for the NPP’s strong position, stating, “Yes, we are very happy that the NPP now has 32 MLAs. This is a significant milestone; one we haven’t seen since the days of the APHLC. We are thankful to God and to the people for the confidence they’ve shown in us.”
He emphasized the coalition’s commitment to unity and stability: “From day one, we have been clear. As a party, as a coalition, and as a government, we aim to send a positive message. Politics is dynamic and complex, but stability, trust, and confidence are crucial.”
“Despite having the numbers, we remain committed to our coalition partners. This mutual trust ensures long-term stability and economic growth for Meghalaya. Therefore, there is no question of any realignment” he said.
While acknowledging the challenges inherent in coalition politics, Sangma underlined the importance of cooperation. “Yes, differences will arise—we may not always agree on everything. But our shared commitment is to the overall development of the state. Our coalition partners have our full support and confidence, and we will continue to work together,” he reiterated.
On the issue of ministerial expansion, Sangma clarified that there is no pressure from NPP legislators to increase the number of ministers. “Our MLAs are confident in the government’s direction. While there may be a desire for more ministerial representation, we must consider the larger political landscape of Meghalaya, balancing the interests of Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia Hills. We remain attentive to the concerns raised by our MLAs and are working to resolve them, ensuring their trust in the government.”
Sangma also expressed gratitude to the people of Gambegre for their support in the recent by-election. “Gambegre has been one of the toughest constituencies for us, especially in the Garo Hills. In the last four elections, we never secured a victory, often finishing third. This win was hard-fought, and I am thankful to everyone who supported us. We received backing from all quarters,” he said.
