Williamnagar, June 15: Residents of Nengkra and adjoining villages in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills, along with several civil society organisations, have lodged a formal complaint with the district administration alleging large-scale illegal transportation of coal through the area during night hours.
In a representation submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on June 15, residents, supported by the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) and A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), alleged that overloaded coal-laden trucks regularly pass through Nengkra while transporting coal from the Nangalbibra region towards Assam.
The complainants claimed many of the vehicles operate during late-night hours and are allegedly carrying loads far beyond the permissible limit, raising concerns over road safety, environmental damage and loss of government revenue.
According to the complaint, the movement of heavily loaded trucks has led to deterioration of roads in the area and increased the risk of accidents for local residents. The organisations further alleged that some vehicles were operating without valid documentation and were deliberately using night-time hours to avoid inspection and enforcement.
The groups clarified that they were not opposed to legal transportation of coal but objected to what they described as violations of transport and mining regulations.
They have urged the district administration to conduct a thorough investigation, take action against those found responsible and intensify night patrolling and vehicle inspections along the route.
The complaint comes amid continuing concerns over coal transportation and mining-related activities in parts of the Garo Hills, where local organisations have repeatedly sought stricter monitoring of mineral movement and enforcement of transport norms.
