Nagaland partners French firm Cooperl to transform piggery sector, protect indigenous breeds

Kohima, July 14: Nagaland has taken a major step towards modernising its piggery sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cooperl, one of France’s leading pork processing companies, to introduce scientific breeding, improve farming practices and strengthen the state’s swine value chain.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday at the Embassy of France in New Delhi by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and French Ambassador to India Thierry Mathou.

Announcing the development on X, Rio described the partnership as a “landmark collaboration” built on mutual trust, shared aspirations and a commitment to sustainable development.

Under the agreement, Cooperl will support capacity building by providing training to pig farmers, veterinarians and technical professionals, while also helping establish a dedicated centre to conserve and promote Nagaland’s indigenous pig breeds.

The collaboration is expected to improve productivity, enhance animal health and strengthen the state’s piggery ecosystem through the adoption of modern technologies and scientific management practices.

Piggery is one of Nagaland’s most important rural livelihoods, with the state recording one of the highest per capita pork consumption rates in the country. However, local production continues to fall short of demand, forcing the state to rely heavily on imports from other parts of India.

Officials said the partnership is expected to boost local production, improve farmers’ incomes and contribute to the long-term growth of Nagaland’s livestock sector while preserving its unique indigenous pig genetic resources.
