Shillong, March 11: In what was essentially a game of pride for both Rangdajied United FC and Nongthymmai SC, Rangdajied United FC concluded their campaign in the OC Blue Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2024 on a high with an impressive 5-1 victory over Nongthymmai SC at the SSA Stadium, First Ground, Polo, on Tuesday.
Goals from Mebanaibok Kharbudnah (40th minute), Pasborlang Khonglikong (43rd, 64th), and Freddy Jyrwa (54th, 69th) secured the win for Rangdajied. Nongthymmai managed a late consolation goal through Michaelson Kurbah (86th).
The positions of both teams in the league table were already confirmed before this match, with Rangdajied assured of third place and Nongthymmai relegated after finishing ninth. Both teams had lost their previous matches.
Nongthymmai finished the season with three wins, two draws, and 13 losses, totaling 11 points. In contrast, Rangdajied completed their campaign strongly, accumulating 35 points from 11 wins, two draws, and five losses.
Coach Aibanjop Shadap chose not to field his strongest lineup, providing opportunities to several lesser-used players. Despite the initial struggle to break down Nongthymmai’s defense, Rangdajied eventually found a breakthrough when Freddy Jyrwa delivered a precise cross from the right, allowing Mebanaibok Kharbudnah to score at the far post. Pasborlang Khonglikong doubled their lead shortly before halftime after a well-executed through ball.
In the second half, Rangdajied continued their dominance. Ieitlang Syiemlieh created the third goal with a clever pass that Freddy Jyrwa converted. Shortly after, Pasborlang netted his second goal, capitalizing on a rebound after Ieitlang’s initial attempt was blocked. Freddy later sealed Rangdajied’s scoring, again from a fortunate rebound.
However, Rangdajied couldn’t keep a clean sheet, as Nongthymmai’s Michaelson Kurbah scored late in the game, finishing a cross from Mowell Chyne for his fifth goal of the season.
This was the penultimate match of the SPL 2024 season and had no impact on the league standings. However, the season finale on Saturday carries significant stakes, as league leaders and defending champions Mawlai SC face second-placed Shillong Lajong FC in a decisive title showdown under floodlights at 5:30 pm.
