Guwahati, Feb 7: Assam’s Excise Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya, announced that the state garnered a substantial revenue of Rs. 3,816 crore from liquor outlets during the 2023–24 session on Wednesday.
While replying to a question raised by Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Minister Suklabaidya also informed that there are 3,003 liquor shops in Assam, of which 1,707 are foreign liquor shops, 923 are pubs, and 373 are indigenous liquor shops. This was what the minister said on the third day of the budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
It is noteworthy that Guwahati city itself sold Rs. 12.5 crore of liquor in the first two days of Magh Bihu, Rs. 8.5 crore on New Year’s Eve, Rs. 6.8 crore during Diwali 2023, and Rs. 22 crore in the first three days during the 2023 Durga Puja festivities in the city.
