State Govt aims promoting local films in dedicated theatres & OTT platform

SHILLONG, MAY 21: The Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Information & Public Relations Department Vijay Kumar Mantri, IAS on Wednesday convened a meeting with the prominent filmmakers of the state comprising of Dominic Sangma, Pradip Kurbah, Commander Shangpliang, Section Syiemlieh, Simi Khongthiang and others at the Conference Room, DIPR Office Complex, Shillong.

The meeting highlights a proactive approach to address the needs and challenges faced by filmmakers in the state. The Information & Public Relations Department will draft a comprehensive Film Policy tailored to address the issues faced by local filmmakers. This policy aims not only to support local filmmakers but also to attract filmmakers from outside the state by providing facilities for film shooting and opportunities for local artists to participate in their projects.

The Film Policy will also facilitate the distribution of films at the state, national, and international levels, thereby promoting the growth of the film industry in Meghalaya. Additionally, initiatives to promote film culture among citizens, such as forming Film Clubs in schools and colleges, were also discussed.

The Commissioner & Secretary encouraged filmmakers to unite under one association to streamline and gave access to government schemes and initiatives provided from the Information & Broadcasting Ministry and other Agencies. Forming a Film Society will also provide a platform for filmmakers to address common challenges collectively.

He also emphasised on the importance of a Single Window Agency in promoting the film industry, through which the government aims to simplify administrative processes for filmmakers, making it easier for them to navigate regulations with different authorities.

He said that the government will also make an effort to promote local films through various channels, including the establishment of theaters or cinema halls dedicated to screening local films. Additionally, the development of an OTT platform specifically for local filmmakers will expand their viewership.

The Commissioner & Secretary stressed on the significance of raising awareness and conducting publicity campaigns prior to the release of films. This positive approach aims to enhance the visibility and success of local film projects.
