Shillong, June 9: The three autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo Hills region are yet to give detailed reports sought by the state government with regard to the maintenance of their respective books of accounts.
Informing this here on Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the maintenance of books of accounts has been an issue that is plaguing the district councils for a very long time for over 20-30 years and that the issue has not suddenly come up this year.
Stating that it is a systematic problem faced by them, Sangma said efforts are being made on the part of the government every now and then to tell them to improve and come up with different rules since they are autonomous bodies.
Further, he informed that in fact the DCA minister Lahkmen Rymbui had conducted a meeting of the department and had issued instructions to write to the three district councils to give detailed reports on the matter. The CM, however, said the government is waiting for the reply of the district councils as none of them has responded till date.
“Steps need to be taken to ensure reforms are done and proper maintenance of books of accounts are being done at their level but as I said they are autonomous in nature and therefore, it is their responsibility to ensure that they take necessary steps,” he asserted.
