Boko, April 13: A young student tragically took her own life in Bihdia village of Chaygaon in Kamrup district on Friday, shortly after the results of the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination were released.

Mithali Deka, a student at Chaygaon Higher Secondary School, reportedly became distressed after the announcement of the results. Unable to immediately locate her roll number, she asked her mother to check the results at a neighbour’s house. While her mother was away, Mithali Deka, who was home alone, took the extreme step and hanged herself.

Upon returning home and discovering her daughter, Mithali’s mother alerted neighbours but it was too late. Mithali Deka was the only daughter of Apurba Deka, a painter and day labourer.

Kamakhya Mishra, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chaygaon Police Station, confirmed the incident, and said the police received information about the death when the body was at Chaygaon hospital. He further informed that the inquest was conducted by the Chaygaon Circle Officer and Magistrate and the body was subsequently sent to Guwahati Medical College Hospital for a postmortem examination. Chaygaon Police has registered a case of unnatural death (UD Case No. 15/2025) in connection with the incident.
