Student ragging in NEHU’s Tura Campus; details of humiliating incident revealed

Must read

Tura, Oct 12: The report of a student from Nagaland being ragged in the Tura campus of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has become the talk of the town. But what every one is trying to find out is what exactly was the student subjected to that he left the campus and filed a police complaint in Nagaland.

Hub News reached out to many people and has finally found out the details on the mid-night ragging of the student, which is nothing short of horrific.

Sources informed that the student, an MBA student of the Department of Agri Business Management in NEHU, was called out from his room in Arbella Boys’ Hostel at the campus at Chasingre at around 1 – 1.30 AM on October 8, 2023, and taken to an empty room. The lights had been turned-off in the room and the perpetrators flashed torchlights on the face of the victim. Due to this, he could not see their faces. However, he could make out that they had good Hindi.

Thereafter, he was asked to sing and dance. Things were quite ok till this point. But then he was allegedly asked to remove his clothes, right down to bare skin! While he complied with the request, one of the perpetrators came and pulled his innerwear down.

Humiliated, he left the hostel and went back to Nagaland, where he is said to have formally lodged a complaint with police.

He had also filed a formal complaint with Dr. Gino Sangma, the Proctor of NEHU, Tura Campus. Below is an excerpt from the complaint that bring to light the horrific incident.

I would like to bring to your notice the details of ragging against me in Arbella Boys Hostel, Chasingre, on 8th of October at around 1:30 to 2:00 AM.

It was my first day and night in the hostel, for which reason I have no acquaintance with the hostellers and no familiarity with the hostel. Around the earlier mentioned time, some guys came knocking my door, to which I opened with courtesy and with no inkling of what was to happen. There was no power light at that time, and as I opened the door, the guys had their phone flashlights pointed on me for which reason I could not identify their faces nor identify the exact number of the guys that came to me (roughly around 5/6). They quickly asked me if was a junior as soon as I opened the door. I politely said, yes, I am a new comer. They then told me to come out of the room, to which I expected they will call my roommate as well since he is of my same batch. But I was called out alone, after which they took me to the stairs at the right, passed through the dining hall, went down the stairs again, and entered an empty room. Once we entered the room, one of the guys locked the room and told me to introduce myself formally. So, I did my introduction twice in English. They all blabbered in Hindi, and told me to do my introduction again in Hindi. Already so engrossed in fear, I tried to make my introduction again in Hindi but they did not like the introduction since I was not fluent with the language. They asked me I was from Nagaland, to which I replied ‘yes, I am from Nagaland’.

One of the guys mockingly asked about what talents I have, to entertain them. I said I have no talents. Then immediately another guy, told me to do ‘naked dance’ since I am from Nagaland, saying I will be knowing how to do a ‘naked dance’. With my whole body shivering and my voice shaking with fear, I begged them not to make me do such things. But they answered back saying I will have to pack my bags and leave instantly if I don’t get along with what they said.

So, I removed my shirt, but one of the guys told me to remove my shorts as well. I replied back saying I will not remove my shorts, so they got furious and shouted at me. I was frightened and terrified all the more. I removed my shorts in total fear. As I removed my shorts, one of the guys came and pulled down my inner wear as well and told me to dance. They started to wave their flashlights on me as I stood there naked. I was so traumatised and utterly terrified as I broke down in tears. They warned and threatened me that they will expose me if I report the incident to anyone(to my judgement, they might have taken videos of me while the flashlights were pointed on me). They told me to leave after threatening me. So, I dressed up and went out…”

Naga bodies demand action against perpetrators (Sub head)

The incident only came to light when the Kohima based Mima Students’ Union (MSU) complained about the ragging incident.

MSU President, Meteiienuo Ngukha has taken up the issue with the Angami Krotho in Shillong and called for the organisation to intervene and take up the case and to secure justice for the student. “The union is utterly shocked and saddened that such heinous acts are being committed towards an innocent and hardworking member of our union. The union condemns the practice of ragging or violence in any form,” Ngukha said.

Meanwhile the Naga Students’ Union (NSUS), Shillong has written to NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, demanding his intervention and justice for the student within 24 hours.

Ragging is a punishable office in India. The law states: (1) Whosoever, directly or indirectly, commits or participates in or abets or propagates ragging within or, outside any educational institution shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees or with both. (2) If the particular person committing or abetting ragging is not identified, every person participating in, or present at, such ragging activity shall be liable to punishment under the Act and collective punishment shall be resorted to so as to act as a deterrent punishment and to ensure collective pressure on the potential raggers.

Meanwhile, NEHU administration is yet to release an official statement on the incident.

Additionally, the West Garo Hills police is aware of the incident. However, since no one has come forward to lodge a complaint with them nor has Nagaland police sought their assistance, they have not taken action, yet.
