Shillong, May 6: Shock and grief have engulfed the Shillong Polytechnic Institute after a young engineering student from Tura reportedly took her own life inside the hostel in the early hours of Monday morning.
The 24 year old student, Diana Dimre Ch Marak, who hailed from Dakopgre area of Tura and was studying civil engineering at the Shillong Polytechnic in Mawlai reportedly hanged herself from the second floor window of the girls hostel.
Her lifeless body was spotted by other girl students of the hostel around 2 O’clock in the morning and they raised an alarm prompting the night watchman and the hostel warden to rush to the scene.
What caused the deceased to take her own life remains a mystery as she was already in the 4th semester of her engineering course, but Shillong police are leaving no stone unturned and have initiated an investigation. Her body has been taken to Shillong civil hospital for a post mortem.
Garo Hills has an alarmingly high rate of suicides among teens and young adults, probably one of the highest in the north east, and there have been calls for setting up of counseling centres across educational institutions to help young adults and teens to open up about their problems, fears and worries.
