Must read

Examine the complicated political dynamics of Northeast India in the 2024 Lok Sabha Election. Will the outcome be shaped by regional parties and tensions?

Shillong, May 06: India is in the middle of the biggest festival of democracy i.e. the 2024 Lok Sabha Election with polls scheduled to take place in seven phases across the country. While in the majority of states, the election process is assumed to take place without any hassle there is a part of India where conducting polls can be a tricky process given the situation of various states in that part of the country.

Talking about the situation tension has been residing between different tribes in some
northeastern states which has resulted in protests turning violent that the ruling government in both state and centre have found difficult to control. It would be interesting to see whether the events in the recent past have an impact on the election.

In this article, we will look at the diverse complexity of the northeastern region during the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

The Numbers

The region of Northeastern India has 25 lok sabha seats in total out of which Assam constitutes the most number of seats(14). Talking about the performance of various parties in the region since 1989 regional parties have played a major role in the Lok Sabha elections.

As far as the performance of national parties is concerned the Bhartiya Janta Party has enjoyed huge success in that particular part of the country as it is leading the North East Democratic Alliance consisting of most of the regional parties barring Assam’s All Inda United Democratic Front a party that claims to be neutral, Assam Jatiya Parishad and Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance which is backed by congress.

Previous Result
During the 2019 Lok Sabha election BJP won 19 out of the 25 seats that were up for grabs in the Northeast whereas this time around the ruling party is claiming to win 22 seats according to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. In the words of Sarma, “The NDA will win 22 of the 25 seats in the Northeast.

Except for Assam, we hope to win all seats in other states of the region.”
On the other hand, Congress which won only four seats during the 2019 election is confident of denying the BJP a clear majority. In the words of Gaurav Gogoi one of Congress’ prominent faces in the Northeast “Setting a target indicates manipulative practices in place to achieve it. Our goal is to stop a majoritarian party from retaining the power to be more authoritative and oppressive,”

Politicians in India are figuring out who will win the most seats in the upcoming election.

The Present Scenario

Although the Congress party is claiming to give BJP a tough fight in the northeast, but the
reality is that the oldest political party in the country is finding it difficult to get a grip on things in the region. They have already been whipped out in the majority of the states in the area while of the four seats they won in 2019 in the northeast three came from Assam and as far as the fourth seat in Meghalaya’s Shillong is concerned it is a do or die situation for former union minister Vincent H Pala who is eying a fourth straight term.

Voting So Far

The first phase of voting in the Northeast took place on April 19th and April 26 whereas the next and last voting exercise in the region will be held on May 7. If we talk about the constituencies of various prominent leaders in the northeast, then Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi has shifted his base to Assam’s Jahrot Constituency, whereas CM
Himanta Biswa Sarma will be contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Jalukbari.
