Shillong, Aug 26: A Maruti Gypsy (without a registration number) was allegedly fired upon by unidentified miscreants while travelling along the border road near Maheskhola in South West Khasi Hills (SWKH), close to the Bangladesh border.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9:30 am on Monday, Superintendent of Police B. Jyrwa said.
According to police, two residents of Nongjri were inside the vehicle when they heard a loud noise resembling a gunshot from the nearby jungle while taking the Koraibari shortcut road leading to Maheskhola. Though they did not see anyone, the duo immediately fled the spot and rushed to Nonghyllam Police Station to lodge a complaint.
Following this, police teams from Nonghyllam PS and Borsora Checkpost rushed to the location and carried out a search operation, but nothing suspicious was found. A case has been registered, and a probe has been launched.
Police officials, led by the Circle Inspector, have since conducted an investigation and searches in the area to ascertain the nature of the incident.
Local residents, however, suggested the sound could also have been caused by some other explosion, but admitted that fear remains high in the border region following recent attacks by miscreants from Bangladesh.
