NHAI directed to deploy more manpower and machinery for faster completion

Shillong, March 28: Dissatisfied with the slow progress of repairs on NH-6, Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla conducted a joint inspection of the highway on Thursday.

Shylla was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills, the Superintendent of Police, the Project Director of NHAI, contractors, headmen from Umkiang and local residents.

Prior to the inspection, a review meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where NHAI officials reported that approximately 65% of the work had been completed, with the remaining repairs expected to be finished within the next two months.

During the field visit, the Deputy Commissioner stated that the district administration remains in constant coordination with NHAI to ensure progress. To facilitate faster work, a no-entry restriction for heavy vehicles from 9 AM to 5 PM has been enforced at NHAI’s request, inform DC.

However, concerns were raised over delays in certain areas beyond Sonapur, particularly at Kuliang, Umkiang and Ratacherra. The MLA have directed NHAI to deploy additional manpower and machinery to speed up completion.

The Superintendent of Police identified key locations where frequent vehicle breakdowns cause major traffic congestion and urged NHAI to prioritize these areas, aiming for completion within two weeks.

Expressing her disappointment, MLA Santa Mary criticised the sluggish pace of work beyond Sonapur. “I have inspected the entire stretch of NH-6 from Khliehriat to Malidor today and I am deeply disappointed. I understand the hardships faced by local residents and commuters due to dust, traffic disruptions and poor road conditions. I will escalate this matter to higher authorities and have directed NHAI to complete repairs before the monsoon season begins,” she stated.

The locals has also urged NHAI to accelerate the work and requesting the district administration to ensure continuous monitoring of the repair process.
