Swachhta Hi Seva 2024: Tura launches multiple initiatives on cleanliness, health & waste collection

Must read

Tura, Sept 29: As part of the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva 2024’ campaign, the Tura Municipal Board held a series of events to promote cleanliness, health, and community involvement in and around Tura.

The campaign, under the pillars “Swachhata Ki Bhaagidari” and “Sampoorna Swachhata – Swachhata Lakshit Ekayi” (Cleanliness Target Unit), aimed to raise awareness about cleanliness practices and transform identified problem areas.

On September 28, a rally was conducted starting from the Rongkhon Songitalgre Landfill and ending at Gandrak Dare. Led by a convoy of garbage-collecting vehicles playing the ‘Swachh Bharat’ song, the rally aimed to educate residents on proper waste disposal, waste segregation, and the dangers of single-use plastics.

On September 25, the Tura Municipal Board, in collaboration with the West Garo Hills district Medical Health Officer, Superintendent of Civil Hospital, and District TB Hospital organized a health camp for ‘Safai Mitras’ (sanitation workers) under the pillar “Safai Mitra Surveksha Shivirs”.

Around 200 Safai Mitras received various health services, including vaccination for Tetanus Toxoid (TT), screenings for diseases like Hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other non-communicable diseases, and treatment for common ailments. The aim of the health camp was to ensure that the front-line sanitation workers receive the care and attention they deserve. This health camp not only focused on immediate treatments but also emphasized the need for preventive care to protect those who protect the community.

Similarly, under the pillar “Sampoorna Swachhata – Swachhata Lakshit Ekayi” (Cleanliness Target Unit), Tura Municipal Board has identified a Black Spot in the Anandamath-Supari Bagan locality for a targeted cleaning effort aimed at transforming difficult and dirty areas. This initiative emphasizes partnerships with the Area Development Committees of Anandamath and Supari Bagan to achieve a timebound transformation of these challenging spots.

The Black Spot was identified due to its status as a difficult garbage point, which is hard to clean as part of regular garbage collection and poses environmental, health, and hygiene risks. Limited road access and challenging terrain have hindered regular waste collection in this locality. To address these issues, Tura Municipal Board is working closely with the Area Development Committees to establish a waste collection system and transform the Black Spot into a waste-free zone.

The Executive Engineer of Tura Municipal Board has assessed the alleyway leading to Anandamath to designate a garbage collection point for residents to dispose of waste directly into the garbage-collecting vehicle. A thorough action plan has been developed to address the logistics of waste collection led by the Chief Executive Officer, Tura Municipal Board on August 19.

Additionally, an awareness programme was held on September 20, focusing on proper Solid Waste Management, Liquid Waste Management, and the Garbage Collection Fee as mandated by the Meghalaya Solid Waste Management Bye-Law, 2020. This programme also included planning for a mass cleaning drive and beautification effort, which was scheduled to commence on September 23, in partnership with volunteers from Anandamath and Supari Bagan Area Development Committees, as well as Anganwadi Workers (AWW) and Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) members, to ensure the success of this initiative.
