Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday said around 36 students from the state are still stranded in Bangladesh amidst the reservation-related violent protests in the neighbouring country.
Of these 405 students, 80 are from Meghalaya, 131 from other Indian states; 249 students are from Nepal, and 8 from Bhutan. In addition, 4 tourists have also been evacuated.
Following the violent unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has directed all its circles/units to prevent Bangladeshis from entering the border of Khasi - Jaintia Hills.
Meghalaya government has activated a helpline number for its citizens in Bangladesh for seeking assistance, if necessary, due to the unrest in the neighbouring country.
Following the unrest in Bangladesh, Meghalaya Government has been able to safely evacuate 263 students from the neighbouring country through the Dawki land port in the State.
